Donald Trump already has the most delegates to be the Republican candidate, according to AP

Donald Trump has officially got the number of delegates needed to win the Republican presidential nomination, confirmed Associated Press. For Trump, whose rivals abandoned the presidential campaign this month, reaching the official nomination is a notable victory in the midst of an intense campaign in which he beat 16 other candidates, many of them with more political experience.

Until a month ago Republican hopefuls they seemed directed toward a close convention, because there was an effort to prevent Trump won enough delegates to clinch the nomination.

According to AP the candidate already has 1238 delegates, which exceeded the limit of 1237 that are needed for the nomination. There are still more than 300 delegates to be elected on June 7, when California and four other states hold their primaries.

Although only won a plurality of votes in some states, due to the size of the regions where elections were held, he managed to attract a record number of votes in the race for the Republican nomination.

Although Trump won the majority of party delegates, some of his former rivals, like Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida and Governor John Kasich of Ohio, still they control the delegates won during the nomination process and this could influence the decision the party at the Republican convention to be held from 18 to 21 July in Cleveland, Ohio.
